im sure you know this but to the people genuinely asking, i think it was because america was 亜米利加 and since the first character was already used in asia 亜細亜 the 2nd one stuck compare with 美国 used in chinese/korean for similar reasons （me thinks）

To add to this, some guy also figured that the pronounciation of America sounded more like Murica, so he just left out the "A" and ended up with 米利堅 (Meriken). Eventually this replaced the old name 亜墨利加 and became 亜米利加, the rest went as you described it,

in chinese it's 'beautiful country'.

It was once 米国 as well^^. It's just that 'mei'(美) sounded more like America than 'mi'(米), so they changed it.
