I didn't know the 2nd English definition of diet is what the Japanese definition is based on. I only knew the 1st English definition: the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.

I always tell my students that ダイエット is different from "diet". ダイエット means to lose weight. Different languages, different words, even if their origins are the same. Very common phenomenon among the world's languages.

I'm on a sea food diet. I see food? I eat it.

Lol yeah it’s the same here in Korea. I went to a gym and the trainer there asked if I wanted to diet. I told him I wasn’t interested, i just want to get in shape and he was like “yeah, diet” and then I realized he meant, like, and exercise plan, not food dieting.
