      Linguisticly u have 2types of languages (this is vastly over simplified) Stressed languages, &"other".It's a sliding scale& languages can be a little bit of both. English uses stress2distinguish betwn similar sounding wrds.Jpn uses length of sound&not stress so it sounds flat! :3

      Length is of course important too, but Japanese uses pitch to exhibit accent, which is why it’s classified as a pitch-accent language.

      Also tone or pitch is different from stress...at least at the prosodic levels

          Didn't do so hot in phonetics...I couldn't produce the correct order of restraints in my final paper on Japanese dipthongs...or rather why they avoid them like the plague. But I did do good on super segmentalism!
