Linguisticly u have 2types of languages (this is vastly over simplified) Stressed languages, &"other".It's a sliding scale& languages can be a little bit of both. English uses stress2distinguish betwn similar sounding wrds.Jpn uses length of sound¬ stress so it sounds flat! :3
Length is of course important too, but Japanese uses pitch to exhibit accent, which is why it’s classified as a pitch-accent language.

Also tone or pitch is different from stress...at least at the prosodic levels

I actually theorize that it picked up that trait via Chinese...but I have no proof of this and I don't know of any languages that have shared super segmental features when unrelated...
