Okay, stupid question time: Are kanji hard to read for older people? They're so small and detailed!

not at all. Old people are good at Kanji because it was used more often back then than today. It might look small and complicated to Western people, but we Asians recognize them as a whole character.(for Chinese it's like reading alphabets. For Japanese it's a bit harder though)
