I don't mean to be glib, but what would be ideal to you? Would you trade the lack of modernity and openness to foreigners for more tea stalls? How would you frame "successful" globalization (or non-globalization) for Japan? I'm genuinely curious as someone who lives there.

Yeah, I totally hear that, even in my thus far futile attempts to learn Japanese I am tried to avoid loan words where I can. But I work in a Japanese org in the U.S. so its tough.
