Regarding pants: I believe the Japanese have adopted the British meaning and use of the word. Leather pants = leather underwear. You'd say leather trousers. Language is fun.

I did this but in English when I came back from Japan once. Person: Do you still live with your parents? Me: 'Nah, I live in a mansion with my partner and a cat' Person: Wow, you must be rich! Me: 'Oh I meant an apartment...'
