    People often comment on the nuclear family moralism in shows like I Love Lucy where the couples sleep in the same room but different beds. But the jokes on them, bc that’s what sleep research shows is, on avg, the most conducive to sleeping

    It's a strong enough pattern at this point that I suggest this heuristic: If someone says something that seems emotionally salient but intellectually obscure, and refuses to elaborate, it's probably because they want you to *feel*, rather than *know*, what they mean.

    I feel basically the same way, if not to the same degree, about "math operates as whiteness". Obscurantist dogwhistle bullshit from groups with immensely unpopular ideas. I wish they'd all shut up.

    Postmodern and SocJus-inflected ideas about math are apparently back in the news. As usual, there is a small kernel of truth in what they say. But they say it so poorly that to accept it as stated is a step backwards. It's an innovation that fails regression testing.

    Most of us normies have a very pedestrian take on ethnomathematics. Yes, acknowledge the contributions of all ethnic groups; yes, challenge the idea that whites or men are better at math than others; but nonsense like "math operates as whiteness" isn't needed for these goals.

    Surely if the doctors had maintained a disciplined attitude of neutrality and objectivity & fought against confirmation bias, the massive chain of mistakes made in this case would have been impossible. Shame on those who heap contempt on the ideals of objectivity & neutrality

    Authorities in Wisconsin did not want you to read this story. First a prosecutor sought a gag order after I reached out seeking comment. Then a state agency sent me a cease and desist order warning of potential criminal charges. Proud of for publishing it anyway.

    This was one of the most difficult stories I've ever worked on, and not just because it's emotional. Please give it a read.
