'Id rather walk two miles with a dog than have a person lead me a block.’ Meet Herbert Douglas, Sr. Blind after a streetcar accident in 1928, he is possibly the 1st African American to have a trained guide dog.

The black and white photograph shows an indoor scene with a balding man, smiling, seated in a chair, holding on to the leash of a beautiful German Shepherd guide dog with a harness. The man looks down at the dog, and the photo is evidence of the fondness between man and dog.
The black and white photograph shows a man in a dark suit seated at a desk, with a German Shepherd seated by the table, with his her ears pinned back, suggesting the animal is happy.
The black and white photo shows an indoor scene inside what looks like a mechanics shop in the mid-twentieth century. Men stand around the warehouse, and on the left of the image stands Herbert Douglas in a hat and suit, his hand on the harness of his guide dog.

An excellent thread and a reflection of the incredible, tireless work done by disability activists to improve accessibility not just for disabled people, but for *everyone*.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have written a BOOK 📗: Asking Animals - an introduction to animal behaviour testing It will be published in April, and is my (at times quirky) take on different behavioural tests, that many of us use.

I need you all to understand why we deafies are freaking out about 's latest video re: fraction. Many of us were prevented from math / science field because of lack of ACCESSIBLE resources and STANDARDIZATION of math/science in sign language.

We badly need more diversity in open-source scientific software. If you identify as female/non-binary, my messages are open if you want to chat about how to get involved with open-source (in particular Python for science / Pydata). Open-source dev is great for acquiring skills!

As a rule, I assume: Reporting on disparities in health outcomes/mortality at the axes of race & ethnicity without context always implies genetic/biological difference

... don't need contributions to be fancy, highly designed, or "expert" (tho we're not gonna stop you :) ... we do need thoughts and ideas from people who are interested in access and working to improve it from all kinds of angles. More info at Composing Access.

Being raised in a racist society means that we are often raised to “overcome” our disabilities because as black people we have no room for vulnerability and failures. We are taught to survive. I want the space to learn how to thrive.

Diversity is a method of addition, not subtraction. It takes nothing away from the community as a whole to create spaces for disabled black womxn and to amplify our unique experiences at the intersection of race and disability.
