Story time: I started my job on Microsoft Docs over a year ago, and one of the big draws for me was that there had never been a dedicated IA in the org before.

I like organizing messes, and I love getting to build a practice, and I expected it to be hard work. I didn’t expect how much I’d need to dig back into the theory of IA.

Lots of common IA ideas are new to my team (if you’re in it, it’s hard to remember how niche a specialty can get), and we’re so big that it makes more sense to train people to “do IA” themselves, rather than always doing it for them.

I got a lot of good faith questions that I didn’t have a quick answer to: Why do breadcrumbs really have to be on every page? Why can’t we put a link to a different site in our header navigation?

The answers to a lot of questions like this come back to “because everybody does it” or “it’s a basic of how the internet works” pretty quickly if you keep pushing. Those aren’t great, but they’re reasons.

“Because I said so” isn’t great evangelism for IA, though, so I put on my librarian hat and started reading. Unsurprisingly, there’s a ton of research out there about how our brains understand objects and the ways they live in spaces.

It’s (much) older than the internet, and so fundamental to how we work that we’ve built it into the web without always realizing we were doing it. In order to do it really *well,* though, we have to know what we’re really doing and why.

In order to do that, we’ll be getting deep in and *specific* about the principles governing how our users are doing this cognitive mapping, the wayfinding needs our sites must support, and how to figure out which set of affordances is right for a situation.

This isn’t about new, fancy deliverables, or completely overhauling how your team works. This should all be stuff you can use on Monday, to help make your case, figure out where to compromise, and come up with priorities. Come and ask hard questions!
