Dear Managers, It is unethical to deny an employee an internal growth opportunity because they are too valuable to move out of your area. Your leadership shortfalls should never be the responsibility of the employee.

Experiencing exactly this recently. They say moving up will most likely happen within another year. Not sure if I should stick around, honestly.

My (unsolicited) thought - Work with them to establish clear agreed criteria; You can move when these things are completed. If this is not possible, perhaps out is better than up? I hope it works out for you.

Agree with the overall sentiment, however, for the good of the many could timing be looked at as a solution?

Sure. Discussion isn't "if", but when and how.

Any advise you would give to an employee on how to approach leadership on this, knowing that leaving is another option?

Make your intentions clear. Don't threaten. Request the co-creation of a clear agreed to plan that indicates what needs achieved for you to be supported in the transition to the new opportunity. If that can't happen... You have another option.

If you don’t allow people to move internally, people will eventually move out of your company entirely.

My @Fidelity manager’s manager told me he couldn’t backfill my role if I was an internal promotion. Could I do both jobs (@ same pay)? I had been both happy and engaged before. 4 weeks later I had a new job at @PolyCompany (thx @jeffgiampa) and a #MgmtMistake to never repeat.
