The line-work is delicate, yet purposeful, especially on the contours of arms and faces. The two Maenads hold up a hare as an offering, alluding to the 'sparagmos' (the dismemberment of a sacrificial animal) that characterised the ecstatic cult of Dionysus.

Here a bearded and imposing Dionysus, identifiable by his kantharos and ivy wreaths (to say nothing of the dipinto of his name above his head!) greets a pair of Maenads.

The Amasis Painter was a leading painter of Athens in the third quarter of the sixth century BC, one whose work was characterised by fine detail and an opening-up of the principal surface of the pot.

Today has been pretty non-stop: Julio-Claudian religion; death of Germanicus; Plato's 'Republic'; Greek Prose Composition; Catullus 110; and a lot of admin bits. now before something else happens!

It is difficult to ascribe such consistent focus on Minerva to anything other than devout belief, one of the benefits of polytheism being that a deity with similar interests as oneself is readily available. Image: RIC 2.1 Domitian 651 - the Owl on Minerva on the Reverse

However, Domitian is credited with the construction of a Temple for Minerva of Chalcis (Chronicle of 354, part 16) and it is even claimed that Domitian had portents of his own death in dreams, where Minerva suddenly withdrew her support from him (Suet, Dom.15.3).

He also constructed a Temple of Minerva in the heart of his forum, much as Augustus had done with the Temple of Mars the Avenger. However, following Domitian's 'damnatio memoriae', Nerva was credited with the temple (CIL 6.953).

Martial (Epigram 7.1) claims that Domitian wore Minerva's aegis on his cuirass on his campaigns; and his role as a patron of the arts also suited an association with the goddess.

For the Romans, Minerva was a key goddess, a member of the Capitoline Triad, who were celebrated in the Temple of Capitoline Jupiter - a building which had been a focus of Flavian building activity as early as AD 70 (Cassius Dio 66.10).
