The US term you mean? The European liberals were about political rights, but were totally fine with status distinctions. The break between liberals and socialists didn’t become clear until the revolutions of 1848, and I don’t think the socialists have ever forgotten that betrayal

Establishing even the barest political rights lessens the operation of status distinctions. If only samurai could carry swords but now either everyone or no one can, the world is more liberal. If only an aristocrat or patriarch could sue in court, but now everyone can -- same.
