Meeting a US President is not a reward for a RUS leader. Canceling a mtg is no punishment. It is all a matter of necessity. RUS-US relationship today is solely about preventing the confrontation from turning into a collision, and escalating to war. This is all.

The only meeting the US should have with that criminal is a drone strike.

Meeting with an aggressive dictator merely lends him some credibility and legitimacy. Putin deserves only condemnation and isolation. #Crimea #Donbas #MH17 #Azov #Seapic.twitter.com/S8DfVahypg

Containment and appeasement didn't work against imperialistic dictators taking over Europe in the early 20th century, and it won't work now. Instead, the goal of diplomacy must be to strengthen and advance Western democracy as a bulwark against such imperialism.

It’s not a “confrontation” “weasel word Dmitri”. You need 2 for that. It is naked #Russian aggression against #Ukraine in the form of piracy against Ukrainian vessels in waters they had every right to navigate under law. It is grievous bodily harm & criminally false imprisonment.

Dmitrii, I'd disagree for once. In a world where nothing matters more than prestige and status, a meeting with the world's (still) most powerful leader is ipso facto about prestige. You don't really need a meeting to prevent a slide to war; that's what diplomacy is for.
