@gossmanster Not a lot of Open Source experience before he dipped his toe into DevOps. His first visit to @linuxfoundation Board he got a standing ovation, followed by 2 hrs of Hell freezing over.

Stuck by Sapiens and the idea that basic work skillsets didn’t differentiate for 5000 years. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapiens:_A_Brief_History_of_Humankind …

Today we have 6 month product cycles. Pace of change acceleration...CRISPR is only science fiction fodder today. Tomorrow it will be historical fiction.

In programming, now you have to be a polyglot. Use the right language for the job, mix Dev and Ops, Be platform agnostic

WIX release in 2004 is the beginning of a graph that ends 10-years later with 2,000 Open Source projects on CodePlex and GitHub (shoutout to @stephenrwalli)pic.twitter.com/zUNhL2wCNR

Linux investments...wake up and realize Windows isn’t the only platform...through @Azure HyperVisor and on to .Net, etc. Customers started begging for hooks to PostgreSQL and MySQL. @Microsoft had to offer tools people actually wanted on their Cloud.

Pitch for Microsoft/Typescript (an Open Source project). The engineer who leads it “feels like he’s collaborating directly with his actual users”...and @gossmanster says it’s just a better way to build software. /me wonders when/how this fact will filter through @Microsoft

So what changed? Open Source won (nods to RedHat, generalized use of FOSS, customer demand, innovations like AI & BigData, research demands data access for reproducability). Also @Microsoft changed. Hiring new people brings in expectations. Leadership also changed...

Uncredited nod to Bill Joy’s insight “You can’t possibly hire all the smartest people”...and a paen to the refresh post-Ballmer of @satyanadella’s leadership. The challenge of leading @Microsoft out of old-school ways.

And on @code (Visual Studio Code). Claim that #GoLang and #JavaScript devs “prefer this editor according to surveys” (not most of the folks I know, I’m guessing). Guy sitting next to me says @code is spyware.

With respect to history, @gossmanster says they started an OSPO recently because “lots of Open Source was happening”.../me wonders about the previous work of @sramji, @stephenrwalli, and several others before?

Slide of ancillary Open Source investments...guy next to me is worried about R on that list (and my pal @revodavid told me recently he’s not really working on R since @Microsoft acquhired #RevolutionAnalytics). I’m guessing R is safe enough from inclusion the Visual Studio Core
