Trump defended his response to the violence in Charlottesville in 2017 when he said there were “very fine people on both sides.” He said the was talking about people who “felt very strongly about the monument to Robert E. Lee. A great general, whether you like it or not.”pic.twitter.com/fulPWpY4zC

In 2010, Germ. historian Neitzel supported Maurice Remy's theory, that von Hofacker, the officer in charge of the sub-plot in Paris (to arrest all SS, NSDAP + Gestapo pers. in Paris), who visited Rommel b4 the plot was carried out, may have informed Rommel. Still, no active role.

He probably knew about it, but was too sick (& injured when his car was hit by shell). Apparently he still insisted he loved Hitler even as he "chose" suicide, mainly to spare his family & reputation from a messy trial. So yeah, not a Resistance hero.

Von Hofacker was sent to Rommel in early July, before he was wounded (July 17). The assass. attempt + "Valkyrie were carried out on July 20. In April, the Plot group had already placed Lt. Gen. Speidel as Rommel's chief of staff. His job: to check Rommel's att. + win him over.

There are hints that Rommel disagreed with the methods (killing Hitler), as he felt bound by his oath, but that he understood the need to remove the leadership. It seems like he favored a cease-fire with the Western Allies, so that Germany could keep fighting the Russians
