The elephant and the stake also perfectly applies to how Maeve broke free of her programming that time MIB killed her child. She never would try this on her own, but intense suffering caused her to rip that stake out of the ground completely out of instinct.

Personally if I visited a place like Westworld I'd probably be like William too; my empathy would kick in & override the knowledge that it's all "fake" because it's still human-shaped. "If you can't tell...does it matter?"

But where William and I part ways is how he internalizes everything. He literally fell so in love with Dolores, a robot he just met, that he went full psychopath on everyone else including his human brother-in-law who was just trying to get him to snap out of it

William was trying so hard to be the Good Guy but at the end of the day learned he was actually the Bad Guy. And I think that Logan was initially perceived as the Bad Guy but actually wasn't so bad, just a normal dude trying to do dude things with his BIL

But then William lost his shit and turned the park from a playground for rich people into Facebook for rich people (and possible body snatching operation for rich people) and dang it William you've spoiled everything (but thank god for Ed Harris & Jimmi Simpson)
