Like Harry Potter, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is a fantasy series with real world themes, stories and messages. Only much better in literally every way.

And I don't know if he ever made any official statements, but it's hard to read about Cheri Littlebottom and believe Sir Terry could ever be a TERF

'Which book should I start with' is a complicated subject I first read Guards! Guards! and it was the perfect intro for me. Hogfather is a Christmas book so good for the time Jingo and The Truth aren't always recommended as starting out books but both seem relevant to the times.

Feet of Clay could be said to deal with trans issues directly. Wee Free Men could be taken as the most Harry Potter themed of the books in that it's about a young girl of school going age that wants to be a witch.

If I had to make a recommendation I would suggest reading through the watch series (starting with Guards! Guards!) as the most culturally and socially relevant series. For witches, fairy tales and feminism go for the witch series, starting with either Equal Rites or Wyrd Sisters

For mythology and history, read the Rincewind series, Color of Magic is the first book but Light Fantastic the first to actually sound like Pratchett. Eric is a great short stand alone that tackles summoning demons and the three wishes tropes

I do feel like the later books lose a certain magic and the earlier books lack a certain anger. Don't start with the first or last books.

And to people essentially replying to the first tweet only to dunk on Harry Potter and snidely suggest I read another author I'm literally recommending another author. That's it. That's the point of the thread.
