Immediately brings up the question os “slave doctors” specializing in the treatment and working health of enslaved people. (At least it did for me growing up on a farm woth a storied tradition of “horse doctors”) so much to unpack here. It is brilliantly done!

I can’t wait to talk to you about how you set this assignment up for students.

I am happy to share! The thing I keep telling faculty is that these unessays actually take a LOT of work, and research. Students end up doing more background research using basic historical skills much like an essay, only the final product is different.

This is amazing! I assign similar projects but would love to hear more about how you frame this assignment.

This is amazing. Dr. Nair, I'm thinking of ways to make my own class on lament, glory and tragedy in the ancient world more tactile than just the standard essay. Would you have any suggestions for how I could use the un-essay in a Comparative Literature context? Many thanks!

A performance of literary works celebrating glory/ lamenting loss if linguistic skills permit? Not to be trite, but a reworking of Springsteen’s Glory Days might be fascinating. Digital storytelling (take a lot of work but worth it) Dioramas of the celebrations of glory?

Professor, this is very interesting that I can’t help sharing some excerpts about the health of Pulaya slaves in Kerala, India from “Native Life in Travancore” Samuel Mateer, 1881. ( It’s obviously not new to you, maybe for amateur history lovers)
