I read this story yesterday and cried in the car a bit. Also, family member was an international student pursuing a Ph.D in psychology here. Felt too close. :-(

So psychology students formed an in-group identity by inflicting psychological pain on an outsider student whose tendency to depression they had interpretive schema to understand clearly. And the profs looked the other way.

Last year at a large faculty meeting, a tenured professor on my campus made a "joke" to the whole room about a new faculty member's Indian name being soooo difficult to pronounce. This sort of thing happens everywhere & all the time.

Yup. In my department I have seen male grad student (he of the “don’t bother telling me how to pronounce your name”) deride female students as “too emotional” and white female grad student telling students of color they didn’t belong in program.
