Zotero is open source so you can use it if you move to an institution that doesn’t have an EndNote license. Plus, I used to use EndNote and I find Zotero more accurately imports citation data

I use Zotero, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I used endnote. Left it for Zotero when EN sued Z. Never turned back.

If you need Word integration, maybe try Zotero. It works OK, very nice browser integration. I still feel like there is so much unmet potential, but OK. If you are OK writing in Markdown (with Pandoc) or LaTeX, I have used Bibdesk. Very minimal, but open source and stable.

I’ve heard Zotero is great, although I have not used it myself. I’m a Mendeley person!
