Emanuel has little Japan experience but in some ways a return to the days when US presidents sent former well-known politicians (Mansfield, Mondale, Foley, Baker) to Tokyo. Last high-profile ambassador in Tokyo was Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late JFK.
Japan will probably welcome the fact that he is a veteran Democrat with ties to Biden, but there is some concern about his blunt approach.

I am glad extreme care and attention was put into sending a soft-spoken, even-tempered, politician for what is a key diplomatic role in a famously consensus-oriented society.
