“It’s easy to die a violent death in SA, but you don’t have the right to die with dignity. I contemplated suicide often but sometimes suicides don’t work and that would be the worst. I was ready to die knowing that I would be incarcerated in my body for months before my death.”

This is so sad, a damming indictment of our broken law. Nobody should be compelled to travel alone to die, and nobody should be denied the chance to be with a loved one as their life ends. 16 years after my brother had Dignitas' help, the situation is no better.

Comment on our petition: "Benign medical care becomes malevolent when it refuses to administer death when it becomes obviously necessary and desired by the patient." Agree?

"When death is inevitable, the way of dying is important." As is our human right to dignity and autonomy over our bodies. We want the choice of ending our suffering surrounded by those whom we love at a time and place of our choosing.

My only fear of death is that no kindly person will take me to the vet when it's time.... we give our animals that dignity but deny it to people, seems all wrong to me!

This is why Otti signed our petition to legalise : "Pets and other animals may be relieved of their suffering, but humans not...Is that not very inhumane? Do the right thing!" Please sign too.

Now, daughter Joy is calling for an inquiry into Britain's "outdated" assisted dying laws, saying: "A law is clearly not working if it makes criminals of innocent great-grandmothers."

An inquiry would enable the views of those most affected to be heard – terminally ill people, their loved ones, the police and other public services. We call on the Justice Secretary, Robert Buckland, to launch a call for evidence as a matter of urgency.
