Nearly two weeks on, it is painfully clear that those suffering the most after Russia's invasion of #Ukraine are civilians - killed, wounded, displaced. This war is senseless. We are ready to support all good-faith efforts at negotiation to end the bloodshed.
I'm happy to be launching my Twitter account today as #UNGA gears up. My aim is to provide some insights into our conflict prevention and sustaining peace work. I hope to count with your support.

I'm extremely concerned and disappointed over the reported decision by the #Taliban to keep girls out of high schools and classes above grade six. This is not only a denial of fundamental rights. It goes against the facto authorities' own commitments. Open the schools for all.
Harrowing, heartbreaking reports from #Ukraine. Civilians killed, families separated, combat raging, thousands displaced. This did not have to happen. I echo : Soldiers need to return to their barracks. Stop the fighting. Time to talk peace seriously. Now.
Positive exchange with DPM/FM on Horn of Africa peace and security challenges, steps to strengthen region’s stability. #Ethiopia is a key and valued partner of the . Emphasized support for peaceful resolution to the Tigray conflict.
75 years ago today, the Charter was signed in San Francisco. A declaration of unity of purpose after the ravages of the Second World War, it set out our mission: “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”. It guides us to this day.
Thank you #SultanHaitham and #Oman for the generous assistance to the United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaydah Agreement during a temporary repositioning of some mission personnel. This help was critical to the during an extremely challenging period. #UNMHA #Yemen
As I just said at the Security Council, the so-called “referenda” in areas under Russian control and outside #Ukraine’s legal and constitutional framework cannot be called a genuine expression of the popular will. My full remarks: bit.ly/3xWIF1Y
The utterly senseless war in #Ukraine has damaged Europe’s security architecture and threatens to further weaken the global institutions and mechanisms dedicated to preserve peace and security. We're ready to do everything possible to help end it. dppa.un.org/en/dicarlo-ukr
It's 18 months since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. But today we also mark Ukraine’s independence. I congratulate the Ukrainian people and reiterate the UN’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. dppa.un.org/en/msg-usg-dic
#Ukraine's cities are being devastated. Civilians are dying. Indiscriminate attacks, including those using cluster munitions, of a nature to strike military objectives and civilians or civilian objects without discrimination are prohibited by international law. Stop the war now.

.@DicarloRosemary on #Ukraine: The need for negotiations to stop the war could not be more urgent. The logic of dialogue and diplomacy must prevail over the logic of war. Full remarks: dppa.un.org/en/ukraine-log
There is only one way to stop the death, destruction and division in #Ukraine: the war must end. And it must end in line with international law and the Charter. My remarks to the Security Council today: dppa.un.org/en/risks-of-po
Looking forward to working with new Security Council members India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway to help advance peace and security globally. Hearty thanks to Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Indonesia and South Africa for their solid work over the past 2 years.
Incredible that we’re still making this case 20 years after resolution 1325, but women must have a seat at the peace table. The evidence is clear: peace deals have a better chance of lasting when women help broker them. dppa.un.org/en/dicarlo-pow
Climate change is rarely the main driver of conflict, but it multiplies existing risks and exacerbates factors that can lead to insecurity. That's already the reality for millions of people globally. We need decisive action now. #EarthDay2020 dppa.un.org/en/climate-cha…
Somalis have come a long way in stabilizing the country and setting it firmly on the path to lasting peace and democracy. Inclusive elections are essential. I urge Somali leaders to resume dialogue and I reiterate our full support. ( photo, 2019)
Just met with Ukrainian civil society reps and heard testimonies and information on the grave humanitarian and human rights situation in #Ukraine due to the Russian invasion. Cessation of hostilities, safe passage for civilians and aid, and accountability are urgently needed.
The war in Ukraine has created a humanitarian and human rights catastrophe, traumatized a generation of children, and accelerated the global food and energy crises. It must stop in line with the UN Charter and international law.

Briefing the Security Council this afternoon on #Ukraine, Under-Secretary-General @DicarloRosemary said the grave damage the war has caused would pale in comparison with the consequences of a prolonged conflict. Full remarks: dppa.un.org/en/dicarlo-war
One month since the start of the Russian invasion of #Ukraine, the devastation is unconscionable. There’s no end in sight to this unjustifiable war and its repeated attacks against civilians. The people of Ukraine need peace. The time for serious talks to end the fighting is now.
Getting ready to brief the Security Council again on the alarming situation in and around #Ukraine. It’s not too late to give diplomacy a chance. The risk of a wider conflict, and the loss of life and destruction it would entail, is utterly unacceptable.
I welcome the Security Council resolution on #COVID19 demanding a cessation of hostilities in situations on its agenda & recognizing the Secretary-General's global ceasefire appeal. Let's now truly press conflict parties to silence the guns and focus on fighting the common enemy.
Deeply concerned over the situation in #Afghanistan. Again, civilians are bearing the brunt of the violence. One thing is clear from the country’s recent history: durable peace and development will not be achieved militarily. We're ready to contribute to a negotiated settlement.
Just completed my visit to #Sudan where I met with Prime Minister Hamdok to discuss the Sudanese transition to democracy. The economic and social challenges at hand are enormous. Sudan requires urgent international support.
Bade farewell today to Adama Dieng, adviser on genocide prevention. His prevention focus made him a natural partner. To avert atrocities, we've worked hard with Adama to identify the potential warning signs, like hate speech. Inspired by Adama, we'll continue this work.
International humanitarian law is clear: direct attacks on civilians are prohibited. Yet, the magnitude of civilian casualties & the destruction of civilian infrastructure in #Ukraine can’t be denied. This demands a thorough investigation & accountability.
Impressed by the critical work and strong commitment of the , and , whose leaders I met today, to bring peace, justice and reconciliation to Colombia. We at the stand firmly behind their efforts.
Met with key international stakeholders on #Somalia today. Recent political developments in the country are very worrisome. I urge Somali leaders to resume dialogue to implement the 17 Sept electoral model, which enjoys broad support and remains the best way forward. (File photo)

Sending support & solidarity to my colleagues in #Somalia following the attack on Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport airport that hit the compound today. will continue its important work so that the Somali people can enjoy sustainable peace and stability.
Hostilities in Gaza and Israel must stop. Palestinian and Israeli civilians are paying an unacceptable price. The violence must give way to a serious effort to reach a compromise on peaceful coexistence in dignity. We know too well what failure to do so will continue to yield.
110 countries and 24 armed groups have backed ’ global ceasefire call. But this hasn't always led to results. To help silence the guns, countries with influence on warring parties, or supplying them with weapons, must do their part too. youtube.com/watch?v=3fzxGx
On my way to Berlin, after good visit to West Africa, to join the Secretary-General at the #Libya summit. Libya needs: support to durably stop the fighting & relaunch peace process. Libya doesn’t need: more violations of the arms embargo, or to become theater of proxy war.
It's intolerable that children are still so often the victims of violence and abuses in war. As we mark 25 years of the Children and Armed Conflict mandate, let’s recommit to eradicate this scourge. My remarks today: dppa.un.org/en/under-secre
The Security Council just adopted an important text pressing for safe passage for Afghans, unhindered humanitarian aid and upholding of human rights, especially of women children and minorities. We'll be looking intently to the Taliban - and all parties - to abide by commitments.

Will accompany Secretary-General to the 2020 African Union Summit 9-10 February. The AU is an indispensable partner on peace and security issues in the continent. From Addis I'll travel to Khartoum to discuss support to #Sudan's extraordinary transition.
Colombia’s expanding efforts to build inclusive, lasting peace merit the world's admiration and support. I welcome the Security Council’s unified message in renewing just now the mandate of
2022 is starting as 2021 ended, with strife or tensions in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Ukraine, Yemen and elsewhere. We’ll keep nurturing dialogue and advocating political solutions. But we also need more unity among players big and small to end conflicts and build peace.

Embarking on visit to #Israel, #Palestine, #Jordan and #Lebanon from 5 to 11 Oct. No shortage of issues to discuss, but will be looking especially at areas where we make a difference in peace efforts, working with governments, civil society - including women & youth - and others.
Great opportunity to discuss with heads of country teams from around the world - the Resident Coordinators - about how our work is interconnected. Can't look at prevention & #peacebuilding in isolation. Development, human rights and peace & security are mutually reinforcing.
The military takeover risks tipping #Sudan into chaos. In Khartoum in July I saw that the transition is the best way to meet the people’s aspirations. That process must be restored, and ALL those arbitrarily detained FULLY freed. Security Council unity is critical here.
We remain fully committed to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders, in accordance with General Assembly resolutions.

Watching the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas closely. We'll keep backing all efforts to ensure it holds. But the only sure way to prevent new violent outbreaks is to reach a just settlement. Serious negotiations on a two-state solution need to resume as soon as practicable.
