I tell people to stop worrying about futuristic runaway smart AI, because it's stupid current AI that will kill us, this is what I mean. Someone bought a product that *literally* text-matched the word "charity" as 'good' and "vodka" as 'bad' and is making hiring choices with it.

Anyone who studies US foreign relations is familiar with this 1972 dialogue between Nixon & Kissinger. Still, it remains shocking to read them casually discuss killing tens of thousands of people, as if it were just a betting strategy in No Limit poker — which, in a way, it was.

No, we need to be design-first. Build AI around people.

I'm not sure how many people appreciate just how much of a maintenance challenge Windows represents for many open-source projects. Before I started working on GHC I had assumed it was bad. However, now I know; no, it's much much worse.

This is... well welcome to FOSS and the problem with it i suppose. Also totally on brand for software people. "Wait my work has huge consequences on people life?!!!!" Welcome to being critical to society. The insomnias and nightmares are distributed on the right.

Fun fact: "If you can't measure it, you can't manage it" is a misquote. I know, I got it wrong for *years* too! The full Deming quote is actually: “It is wrong to suppose that if you can't measure it, you can't manage it – a costly myth.”

“No one should ever SSH into hosts” is the greatest lie the devil ever told.

Very tired of the idea that you can understand the behavior of a system in full from observability tooling. The system is composed out of hosts and you need to be able to watch them run.

When complex systems break, you generally never actually “fix” them. You just apply enough mitigation for them to operate correctly in the current environment.

Heresy! Microservices solved my last company's problem of having 500 developers working on a single repo with no CI/CD process to speak of, so clearly it makes sense now at my 3 person Twitter For Pets startup too.

It helps me when drama comes & it ALWAYS comes. There are indeed dangerous people. But I’m not gonna work against them by working against everyone. I’m not a thin blue line. I’m a lucky neighbor with city resources behind me. So I’m gonna build a team. And that team is my beat

STEPHEN KING WRITING ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ENGLAND: The old man who ran the town dump communed with darkness. He kept a Hand of Glory in a 1982 Boston Bruins mug. Crows and bats were his to command. ME AFTER MOVING TO NEW ENGLAND: Jesus, I used to think Stephen King made shit up.

the digital economy is basically every corporation in the world going through your garbage constantly, and selling the data on that garbage to each other, with occasional detours into snitching you out to the feds or accidentally giving the data to criminals who have it forever

Basically moaning about how something isn't funny and putting it down is what older generations have done to edgier comedy for years. I think it's quite important that we don't invert that just because the Sid James watching generation can't relate to the lives of gen X/Y.

Nearly every virtual currency project, including bitcoin, touts financial inclusion as a main selling point. Are the world's poor really going to ditch cash for stablecoins? Someone please offer a convincing argument.
