Funny thing about "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" - that phrase literally means impossible or exceedingly foolish attempts to overcome obstacles without external assistance. It derides the very nature of what certain folks use it for today.
It’s interesting how that phrase makes Finns go wtf. I’ve tried to explain how the American dream works. It illicits a lot of head shaking.
