Confidence has really taken a tumble and I feel like I’m an awful painter. Maybe I need more time away, or to focus on building rather than painting.

A bit of advice a pro painter gave me was that the most important thing was to complete your model. Painting it to completion was more important than comparing it to other people's work. As you complete them, you'll find each one gets better and better.
After you move past the "discovery" phase of learning, it's important to work through this plateau. That's where a lot of new skill honing happens. It's one of the toughest parts of the hobby to trudge through but you'll come out a better painter!
