1984, Mr Miyagi's backyard dojo?
As someone of Japanese descent and who's studied martial arts for 30+ years, I found the historical inspiration to be quite cool. It's clearly historically inspired by, if not absolutely historically accurate, Japanese feudal warriors as are the back banners of Marine sergeants.

I'm not a scholar of Japanese culture at all, so I will stand corrected. I liked the paint job and recognised the symbols from a more recent era!

Also remember, the Klingon culture in Star Trek is HEAVILY inspired and based on the Japanese Feudal Samurai cultures, just as other fictional races are based around different country states in our world
