    1. Excited to share Google’s most ambitious clean energy goal yet: Operating entirely on carbon-free energy by 2030:https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/sustainability/our-third-decade-climate-action-realizing-carbon-free-future …

        2. This new announcement builds on a long history of leadership on climate and energy. Google became carbon neutral in 2007 and in 2017, Google became the first company of its size to match 100% of its electricity consumption with purchases of RE:https://www.blog.google/outreach-initiatives/environment/meeting-our-match-buying-100-percent-renewable-energy/ …

        3. We’re now aiming for the final step - 24/7 carbon-free energy - by 2030. This a first-of-its-kind target and significantly more ambitious and complex than 100% renewable energy purchasing goals. Let me explain.

        4. To achieve our 100% renewable energy match, we buy an equivalent quantity of MWh of renewable electricity as the MWh of electricity that we consume in our operations around the world, on an annual basis.

        5. This in itself is a huge feat. To date, Google has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 5,500 MW of renewable projects, which has enabled additional wind and solar energy capacity to come onto electricity grids where we operate.

        6. In fact, we are the largest non-utility purchaser of renewable energy in the world.

        7. But even though we buy as much renewable energy as we use electricity each year, there are both temporal and geographic gaps in our clean energy supply relative to our demand. We buy more RE in the midwest US, for instance, to compensate for buying less in parts of Asia.

        8. With #24/7cleanenergy, we are setting our sights on the ultimate goal - fully decarbonizing our electricity supply, every hour of every day, everywhere. We don’t want to be net-zero emissions, we want to be zero. That means sourcing round-the-clock clean energy.

        9. In 2018, we released a white paper detailing our ambition, presenting a framework for measuring carbon-free performance at Google data centers; and exploring some examples at specific facilities: https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-sustainability.appspot.com/pdf/24x7-carbon-free-energy-data-centers.pdf …

        10. Today, we’re releasing a new white paper with our first global assessment of carbon-free energy performance, and a roadmap for how we plan to achieve our new target: https://www.gstatic.com/gumdrop/sustainability/247-carbon-free-energy.pdf …

        11. Achieving our 24/7 carbon-free energy goal will require new technologies and new approaches. It will be extremely challenging and technically complex. But we do believe it’s possible, and we can’t wait to demonstrate that it is. #24/7cleanenergy #carbonfree2030 FIN/
