There may not been much bird migration happening at the moment, but insect migration is in full swing. There has been a major arrival of Painted Lady butterflies into the county over the last couple of days.pic.twitter.com/RQD0vW6YOd

This may not prove a prolonged cold snap, but it's still vital to provide your garden birds with fresh (unfrozen) water, and plenty of food. If possible create some snow-free ground as well. Thanks on behalf of the birds!pic.twitter.com/d7SVeef78t

Big westerly passage of Red Kites this afternoon in the clear blue skies above Devon. Will be more tomorrow if the weather stays the same so if you get the chance get out and look up! Just remember, they can pass over VERY high up.pic.twitter.com/y1pFcKyhSX

Looking promising for some good sea watching off the south coast this Friday/Saturday. Should be some Pomarine Skuas around, and maybe a nice selection of passage terns and waders. Be sure to keep up to date with the latest news at; https://www.devonbirds.org/news/bird_news/devon_bird_sightings …pic.twitter.com/SYnOvWi6Hv

With warmer weather forecasted this week, today's Hoopoe at Sherpa Marsh is surely going to prove the first of many? Look out for other overshoots too like Woodchat Shrike, Red-rumped Swallow, Purple Heron, etc. There could easily be something rarer too...pic.twitter.com/Nuh2dgHliH

Let's hope we've now seen the last of the snow, although the most recent spell hasn't seemed so devastating for our birds. With a few more spring migrants appearing on our shores this afternoon, are we about to witness a rush?

Multiple reports this afternoon/evening of dying or dead birds across the County, particularly thrushes, Meadow Pipits, Lapwing and Golden Plover. Although a thaw is forecasted please do anything you can to help, like putting out food (oats, soft fruit, seed) and water. Thankyou,pic.twitter.com/BF8kDSL5JA

Don't forget to keep the bird baths defrosted and bird food topped up during this extremely cold weather. You're also more likely to see some unusual visitors to the garden as natural food becomes hard to find, so keep your eyes peeled!

The Hawfinch influx is really hotting up in Devon now, numbers presumably boosted by birds moving down from other parts of the UK. 119+ near Exeter was an amazing count yesterday but there's small groups all over the County to enjoy, plus probably many more to find...pic.twitter.com/GDOuhWLHrZ
