Why not allow private insurance up to a $500,000 limit then have the government become a catastrophic provider? That should bring premiums way down by limiting risk while preserving choice.
Socialized medicine, single-payer, government-run health care would only exacerbate problem, turning doctors and other med professionals into employees of a giant fed bureaucracy.
