What I've learned in my surprisingly long comics career is that everything has its time. Mad's time ended in 1975. That they kept it going for another 54 years is an incredible feat.

My view of Mad is the same as the nearly extinct political cartoon genre. I'll shed a tear, but, c'mon. Who didn't see this coming miles away? I'm not going to lament that the end of comics is nigh. Because that just isn't true.

I doubt any kid grew up reading Mad religiously, as I did, since 1990 at the latest.

Now add Mad to the list of extinct comics, things I could never imagine NOT existing when I was a teenager. Newspaper comic strips, gone, as print entities anyways. Political cartoons, gone. Warren mags, gone. National Lampoon comics, gone. Spinner racks, gone.

Not to mention alt-weekly comics! Once the most fertile genre in comicdom. But we've all moved on to other things. And that's the important point. Comics are flourishing. GNs, kids series, YA books, webcomics, small press, etc etc. And the variety & quality is astonishing.

I'm sad to see Mad go. It meant a lot to me when I was 10. There was a 5-year period there when I literally didn't have a copy withing arms reach. I had a couple stacks of old Mads three feet high in my bedroom.

I'll probably leaf through a couple copies of my Mad collection today, and remember.

Very disappointed. But Mad hasn't been its old self for many years.

I thought they started waning somewhere in the late 90s but the 70s was their peak. At times I had to be careful reading it in public for fear i couldnt stop laughing.
