Marie was one of the first women to break into mainstream comics. She started as a colorist with EC (and may be the last of the EC stable.... I'm trying to think of another), then moved to Marvel where she spent the bulk of her career.pic.twitter.com/WHgPfivqbS

She drew The Hulk in 1967 & 68, the first woman to be allowed to work on a major title. She was also Marvel's primary cover artist in 1970, the year I fell in love with comics at age 10. Those covers of hers are what I remember most.pic.twitter.com/em6QeGwfAi

As I understand it, she did the coloring on the covers as well, and the distinctive Marie palette helped Marvel close the gap on DC, which at that point had far superior covers.pic.twitter.com/Z9yrrdTWmf

This was an important gig, back when covers are what sold floppies, thanks to young clueless toads like me. Many titles lived or died because of their covers alone, that 15-cent impulse buy off the spinner rack.

And Marvel was scrambling after Kirby bolted. He had been their primary cover guy for years. Marie held the fort until Gil Kane was tapped for the job during the "picture frame" cover era.

Marie's last significant art assignment was on Kull the Conquerer, inked by her brother, the legendary John Severin.pic.twitter.com/Vvg9SvecvR

It was one of the best, weirdest books of 1972, the year of the sword & sorcery fad in comics. Once Barry Smith bailed on Marvel and Conan, the Severins' Kull was the best title of the genre imo.pic.twitter.com/bsZMptjQ6j

Critically acclaimed, but it didn't sell all that well, so we only have 10 issues with the Severins. I still have my set. Highly recommended. It's just a great read.pic.twitter.com/bRgqtxSzFK

After that, Marie spent the rest of her career on the production side. Quite a legend.

Musing a bit more on her 1970 covers. She's obviously channeling Kirby here, who was Marvel's go-to cover guy throughout the Silver Age, even on books he didn't draw. Kirby had just split and Stan and Marvel were scrambling (and panicking).pic.twitter.com/KE8kiJTZHp

It's interesting they chose Marie. They were likely desperate. Kirby left without warning. Romita & Buscema scrambled to take over Jack's books. It's known Stan weighed in on every cover, so it was a high pressure job.

This was still an era where a great cover could save a book from cancellation by spurring all those 15-cent impulse buys off the spinner rack. I know I always grabbed anything with a Kirby cover.

DC's cover guy was Neal Adams, and DC had far superior printing with all those beautiful washtones. So it was a daunting task for an artist who wasn't exactly A-list at the time. I think she held her own.

She only did covers in 1970. You'd see some Marie backgrounds after that, but Romita or Buscema did all the main figures. The Gil Kane got the gig during the "picture frame era" from 1972 on. Frankly, I liked Marie's covers better than all those guys.
