Derek Lowe’s Tweets

It's probably only a question of time before I leave here as well. This kind of rhetoric makes me feel unsafe as an openly queer person. Which is unfortunate, because I owe so much to the science twitter community.

Now he’s accused recently-resigned Twitter staffers of being pedophiles (which sounds familiar after his 2018 Thailand cave-diver fiasco) and tweeted out “Prosecute Fauci” as an idiotic pronoun joke. Someone will get hurt as this continues. (4/)

I’ll leave my account up for reference and to keep anyone from causing trouble by re-using my name. But I’m not making content for Elon. I will not be checking Twitter after today, so DMs will not be a good way to contact me. (12/)

If I have any credibility to lend or usefulness to add, I don’t want to give it to what Twitter is becoming. What that might be is “bankrupt” at the rate things are going, honestly. Anyway, I’ll miss a lot of people here, but I can still be found! (10/)

People have advised just blocking/muting him and others, and that does improve the experience here. But closing my eyes doesn’t make the rising levels of bullshit disappear. In the end, I don’t want to give this platform any more time and energy. (9/)

The levels of misinformation here (medical and otherwise) are increasing, and the site now doesn’t even attempt to do anything about it. Quite the opposite. Its owner is giggling while he cheers the stuff on. Why not? Outrage = clicks and engagement. (7/)

There have always been folks like that on this site, of course. But I used to take time to report their tweets, and the worst of them would get banned. Now Twitter’s owner is stroking their fur and feeding them little treats. (6/)

He’s reinstating, replying to, encouraging, and agreeing with an assortment of other trolls, racists, anti-Semites, anti-LBGTQ, Qanon enthusiasts, etc. These are his people. That’s his vision for Twitter. We should believe him when he shows us. (5/)

It is, of course, what has done to the place, is doing, and will surely continue to do. I’ve seen enough. Weird business decisions aside, he’s an erratic attention-seeking troll, and he (like any such person) is just getting worse with time. (3/)

I am very unhappy about this. I’ve met a lot of great people on this platform and it’s been a valuable source of news and communication over the years. I’ll miss it terribly, and I've been debating this for weeks. But I can’t stay. (2/)

A lot of people are having this conversation with themselves:

I’m really struggling with whether I should remain here, given the CEO is hell-bent on turning this site into a disinformation machine for persecuting scientists & marginalized groups. There’s value in pushback but just using the platform creates value for the guy in charge. So:

Organic synthetic writeups in SEO-optimized style would push me over closer to a life on the road, driving the big rigs. Or perhaps a move to Montana, farming wolverines or something.

What the people of Iran are up against: a death sentence because protest against the regime is moharebeh, “waging war against God”. And hundreds of others have been shot or beaten to death without even this legal fiction. . .

Iran has executed protester Mohsen Shekari after convicting him of waging war against God for allegedly injuring a Basij member and blocking a street. Shekari is the first protester to be hanged since antiestablishment protests erupted in September. #محسن_شکاری #اعدام_نکنید
