Love this chart from on the Casper IPO: for each mattress sold (~$1,362 revenue), the company spends $480 on sales on marketing. That means it would be cheaper for Casper to stop all sales and marketing efforts, and instead just tape $400 in cash to each mattress.

Interesting fact: certain clinical protocols are patented. Hospitals can license the Schmitt-Thompson Telephone Triage (list of qs that evaluate the seriousness of a caller’s condition) from only a handful of companies. One licenser was Health Navigator which Amazon acquired.

This appears to be Casper's business: Buy mattress at $400. Sell at $1,000. Refund/return 20% of them. --> Keep $400, on avg. ... then spend $290 of that on ads/marketing. ... and $270 on admin (finance, HR, IT). --> Lose $160. Repeat.

Weasel damage is the 4th most frequent cause for non-collision auto insurance claims in Germany: 198,000 claims in 2018. That probably underestimates the carnage. “We only have data from those insurers that offer a weasel policy."

Let me get this straight: physicians lease EHR software and buy computer hardware thereby paying the EHR company to enter their patients health information and data which the EHR company subsequently sells!? Returning no financial or clinical benefit to the physician or patient.

. has added more products to their portfolio, one being a service to transcribe spoken medical dictation into text. A great step forward in advancing patient care and prevention. Do you think other companies should follow their lead?

I talked to a head of a cancer center at a large health system today. I asked how often they hear from companies that want to access data sets on cancer patients to build clinical tools on top of the EMR. The answer: "Weekly." This is going to be a big topic going forward.
