Derek J. Grossman Retweeted John Bolton

My read on this is Bolton will be out soon, Pompeo in as NSA and SecState—in true Kissingerian fashion. Bolton was literally removed from Trump’s Koreas visit & sent to Mongolia where he would do far less damage.https://twitter.com/AmbJohnBolton/status/1145288948291440642 …

Delighted to be in Ulaanbaatar & looking forward to meeting with officials to find ways to harness Mongolia’s capabilities in support of our shared economic & security objectives. Thank you for the warm welcome Secretary of State @davaasuren_d pic.twitter.com/AN8T1AHryg

Interesting read, given it would remove that good cop bad cop dynamic that I think was quite helpful for Trump.

If Pompeo leaves the State Department before 2020, my read is that he is heading to the Senate instead of the NSC

Solid analysis. If this is true did Bolton know his role was to rattle the saber so that the counter faction seems rational and reasonable?

My question is why Trump didn't sack Bolton earlier? He has led to two near wars: Venezuela and Iran. Then a completely muddled policy toward North Korea. So, despite these constant failures, why the longevity?

I highly doubt Bolton's out. Rather this visit is supposed to also be a symbol to Tehran, and his visibility and hawkishness were a liability. So much has already happened, usually the NSC/WH leak to give Trump an out and blame his lieutenants. Possible though.

Dunno, but Trump wanted the kudos as first sitting President to step on NK soil, and there's no way Kim would've allowed it with Bolton there. Bolton is like the angry unstable 'friend' that you invite along whenever you need to threaten someone, but not good for arse licking...
