  3. I've noticed that, while last year's hot colour was "mustard," this year's colour appears to be "butter." I'm not sure if this is a positive development.

  4. 3/3 So my question is: what happens in other parts of the country? Will courts extend a "warning" in the manner of a "warrant to hold"? Or will an arrest warrant issue for a non-appearance (with counsel nonetheless present) as an matter of course (ie: automatically)?

  5. 2/X If the accused appear at the next date, the "warrant to hold" is "vacated," and life goes on normally. Certain judges (ie: Red Deer) will "arrest" an accused on a "warrant to hold," and detain them in cells despite the warrant never being endorsed and "issuing."

  6. 1/X Question for non-Edmonton criminal bar. Here, if an accused doesn't appear on a matter where their appearance is required, the Court may "issue" a "warrant to hold" pending the accused appearing at the next date. The warrant is not endorsed & does not, technically, exist.

  10. The issue (the safety of sex workers, and how the Crim Code amendments intentionally made their work demonstrable LESS safe) now has some public traction. Let’s use that attention to create a real public debate, etc. with an eye to improving safety.

  14. Great work, Conrad. I'm glad it worked out this way; I can tell you, from experience, the it's just as common (at least) for things to go in different direction. That said, I hope that your story inspires others to take a similar stance!

  16. My first album will be called "The Wound and the Wetness." It's a phrase lifted verbatim from an aggravated assault trial I am appealing.

  17. Super great piece, Kyla. I want to respond more, and hope to. We (lawyers, I mean) need to do a better job on mental health issues. I’m very glad to see you at the barricades. More to come!

  18. Great column. I hope that , , and take note. Medicine Hat IS the “conservative heartland” that they claim to be so focussed on “representing.” They cannot in good faith believe they represent any Albertans anymore.

  20. Perhaps more substantial steps need to be taken? Perhaps something a little less Breton, and a little more permanent? Senate ethics committee recommending Lynn Beyak be suspended again
