why would a "racist bot" want to reveal what it is though?

Racist. Not smart bot, racist bot.

but why would a racist bot that isn't smart want to do that?

Honestly I don't know, they're by default on the shallow end of the bell curve already. At a guess it's not a signal to us; it's like putting a blue wave in your profile, or any other team signal, right? Shows you're among friends, sign to team up, etc?

but why would a bot care about "teaming up"? -- he's a bot after all, he doesn't care about human emotions such as feelings of fraternity.

Well you're getting awfully pedantic and makes me wonder why but to answer the question you asked:the goal of these people is to sow fear and make a disproportionate amount of noise. They want to look like the majority to encourage the sort of spike in racism we've seen this year

so are they people or bots? and if they are people (even racist people), why would they want a "spike in racism," when it would only brand them as evil and untouchable, rather than given them any real power which they presumably want?

I deny your premise that it's either or. Bot is shorthand for either actual automation, or disingenuous troll account deliberately spreading hate and or political agenda. Racists aren't automatically evil, there's a whole political party actively courting them.

so if they're neither bots nor people, they must be androids then? but most androids are super-smart, at least that's what most science fiction movies tell me. and what makes someone evil? bad views such as racism or being courted by a bad political party?

Replying to @Locus_of_Ctrl @gm_wggames and
Because the people who design these bots want to spread their racism. It's really not that hard to grasp.

Spreading racism like butter across the great biscuit of the body politic.
