    I really like XML because it let's you create and validate complex and recursive types fairly easily. In JSON this is much harder to do.

    Unpopular opinion... I've always liked XML, the verbosity being my least favorite part. It's expressive, extensible, transformable, and easy to read and validate. We violently weeded it out and replaced it with a string of "my first declarative document" kindergarten projects.

    I've been thinking about something like this for a while. I think the future of high performance cloud applications is programming directly against the hypervisor. Many applications can go without a full OS. It's a shame it's in C++ and not Rust though.

    I heard them getting increasingly nervous and calling volunteers when I was in the airport. I think all the Delta flights from Seattle are super overbooked.

    Delta just announced that a flight from Seattle to Las Vegas was oversold, and offered $500 and a free hotel stay to volunteers. No one took the offer. Now I am dying to hear everybody's must-get-to-Vegas-on-Christmas story.

    I've seen something similar to this. The company that had perhaps some of the best engineering talent in Vancouver did a single 1 hour long interview with a relatively simple coding question. That signal + the resume was more than enough to find good people.

    Perhaps not coincidentally, at the place where the vast majority of candidates weren't rejected for criteria that are weakly or uncorrelated with job performance, we didn't think about hiring much because it was so easy That company had the highest average productivity I've seen

    So you end up doing what everyone does: install a docker image. This is the new normal: every program requires its own specific OS because it's too picky about the version of each library it uses. We used to dream about multi-user OSes, now we can't even have multi-program OSes.

    I -- along with anyone else who saw Duane Northcutt's jaw-dropping demo -- will remember exactly where they were when they first saw SunRay. The journey of SunRay was Sun writ small: the potential, the promise, the challenges, the stumbles -- and (ultimately) the fondness.

    Would be interesting to read take on this

    A long time ago— like 15 years ago— I worked at Sun Microsystems. The company was nearly dead at the time (it died a couple years later) because they didn't make anything that anyone wanted to buy anymore. So they had a lot of strange ideas about how they'd make their comeback.

    The internet in the bay area isn't as good as one would think it is

    If I worked for one of the world’s largest tech companies I would simply design products assuming that everyone has access to the same quality of internet connection as me, an employee of one of the world’s largest tech companies

    One of my favorite still active blogs is an enigmatic Livejournal one that publishes memoir of Soviet life. Here's a fine post documenting Donald Knuth's visit to the USSR in the 70s. There he is, right under the hammer and sickle.
