I meet a lot of first time founders and young execs who believe they have it harder than anyone else. The discomforting reality is that that's generally not the case. The best talent recognizes the ubiquity of their problems and steps up.

One of my biggest fails at seed/series A was thinking repeatability was the same as scalability 🤷‍♂️ ✅ a lot things that work fine 100 times in a row 🤮 melt down at 1,000x

If I can't make up phrases like "pro-forma architecture" then why am I even in this business?

Runner up would be advice from on product leadership hiring - have the candidates create your roadmap based on what they know about the company. It should then be obvious who to hire.

Best advice on product mgmt I ever got was "what are the most important things that your most important customers expect you to be excellent at? Until you are excellent at those things stop doing everything else" - s/o for that one a year ago.

There should be 90% fewer advisors listed in seed decks. The best advisors work with founders out of genuine intellectual curiosity and a desire/ability to help first. Once that happens, formalize the relationship. Not the other way around.

The most disappointing part of all the changes at is the unbelievable drop in quality. We lease about 14K sq ft from them and now have to hire our own staff to clean and maintain the space. Getting a giant middle finger from our acct mgrs in the process. Way to go.

Three years ago encouraged us to use a little "brute force" to grow. Early stage founders can't forget that this is supposed to be hard and sometimes there's no substitute for back-breaking work. Even 3 yrs in. 120K cold calls in 2019. 3x ARR growth.

Always surprised how many VP and above candidates *don't* run hard-core diligence on the companies they're interviewing at. We need you more than you need us. Give us hell in the process and make the right call for yourself.

"RPU is low but we'll make it up in volume" JAMF is the only B2B saas company I've seen get to ~$100M+ ARR with basically a single ~$3/month product. Channel sales + near monopoly in their segment.

The founder/CEO “flow” where a leader can constantly take in new ideas, process, delegate + pursue multiple initiatives in parallel - at scale - is hard to explain. Amazing when you see it in action though. 🚀

Too many rising star managers sabotage their careers by taking the first VP-level role offered. Often by third-rate companies. They can’t fathom a ‘step back’ to director, even at an A+ startup. The step back was the inflated title at the middling company. Play the long game!
