In 1972, Richard Nixon swept the South by a resounding margin, winning every state in the region. In the next election, the region swung hard towards the Democrats, with Jimmy Carter winning all but 2 Southern states. What a difference 4 years can make! #ElectionTwitterpic.twitter.com/hkGTHo9eSD

It’s so interesting to me how states can swing so much from one party to another in the span of just 4 years. This was, of course, back when we weren’t such a politically polarized nation. Still, it’s interesting to look at.... especially Georgia!

Although Ronald Regan won the south in 1980 a large number of those states were 4% or less of a majority

Helps that Carter was southern Democrat and the last duly elected president resigned in disgrace.

First point is true, but as far as the second point it really isn't that simple, because even in spite of Watergate, 1976 was extremely close, OH/MS/WI were within 2% of flipping red.

What a difference shared ethno-regional identity made for white Southerners, who still saw themselves as Democrats regionally (& voted for white Southern Dems in down-ballot elections) despite voting for Nixon nationally over a civil rights Minnesotan & race quota South Dakotan.

Similar maps of Congressional elections during that period would show exactly what you’re describing.
