To prepare to read this, I’m re-reading Sam Walton’s autobiography and Brad Stone’s “The Everything Store” and “Amazon Unbound.” Yes, I’m a nerd.

My former Recode colleague is a fucking animal on the phone and reports like absolute crazy. So you know this book on the rivalry between Amazon + Walmart is going to have all the goods. Just preordered.

“Walmart & Amazon are too often discussed separately, despite their overlapping impact on America and the world. Winner Sells All explores the biggest business story of the past 20 years, through the eyes of an unusually broad and deep network of sources.” — Christopher

“A front-row seat to one of the most…consequential corporate battles of our time—and it comes with a backstage pass, revealing dirt the companies don’t want us to see. A must-read for anyone interested in the future of commerce.” —

“Jeff Bezos has taken control over what we buy and how it is sold to us, in ways that are both worrisome and impressive. Del Rey delivers the goods on how it all went down, juxtaposing Amazon’s stunning rise with the efforts of a once-dominant Walmart to keep up.” —

My hope is Winner Sells All will not only inform but entertain. While I'm proud it’s been called a “must-read for anyone interested in the future of commerce," I trust that many types of readers will find it compelling; it’s equal parts history book, case study, and TV drama…

History is written from many sides, and execs’ side of the story provides just one point of view. As a result, I spoke with more than 150 insiders and relevant outsiders in total to provide a holistic view of this rivalry as it expands from groceries to logistics to healthcare.

I've spent the last decade reporting on Amazon & Walmart, their ambitions, successes, and faults. That credibility helped me persuade both companies to agree to interviews with many of their top decision-makers all the way up to the CEO level. But this is not a book of access…

Peak was a beautiful thing. It’s easy to second-guess a handful of key decisions that eventually made this unfortunate outcome feel inevitable, but I’m going to focus instead on all of all the incredible people that this news brand brought into my life

We’re saying goodbye to the Recode branding today, but you can still find all the same great work from the reporters you know and love, plus an expanded focus on tech and innovation, over at vox.com/technology. vox.com/technology/236

Picked up a curbside order at Walmart. All 14 pickup spots taken, most of which were delivery drivers, I was told. Walmart increasing order capacity soon, worker said.

On what would have my been my father’s 71st birthday, a useful reminder for me and I hope some of you too

Some of the life lessons my father taught me, without even knowing it. Taken from the eulogy I wrote after his sudden passing in June 2018. This list would be much longer if he had lived through these last three months.

Terry Bradshaw just told andy Reid to “waddle over here,” then hinted he’s too old and should retire soon, then referred to Chiefs skeptics as “them low lives”? Drunk or this just him? #SuperBowl

Walmart going directly after Amazon Fresh customers. With this move, Amazon is essentially saying it would rather have fewer, more profitable customers — which is not the way it looked at things for much of its history

That Fresh $150 free delivery minimum is looking pretty stale right about now. 😵‍💫
