Sentencing enhancements don’t work. They are the product of a tough on crime sentencing era that led to our racist system of mass incarceration. These enhancements have torn apart families & communities, all while making us less safe. It’s time we end them.pic.twitter.com/5E5mjwnsbF

An eye for an eye tooth for a tooth. Do you think that public executions wouldn’t make you think twice before killing? Public castrations of a man for raping a thirteen year old girl? If you knew that you would be deported for selling crack or fentanyl I think you would think

It doesn’t work though. You’re also applying this to extreme cases (like most overtly punitive justice policy) and not focusing on the vast majority of people this type of thinking ensnares. That’s not to mention you’re referring to a set of laws specifically shown to be unjust.

Crime way down since three strikes went into effect.

Crime went way down in every jurisdiction at the same rate during that time frame, regardless of whether they imposed a three strikes penalty or not.https://www.americanbar.org/groups/crsj/publications/human_rights_magazine_home/human_rights_vol29_2002/spring2002/hr_spring02_vitiello/ …

it’s not about deterrence, it’s about keeping them away from normal san franciscans. when will you numskulls stop thinking only about the criminal’s life
-
I’m thinking about everybody’s life. There is no need for this punitive shit, it just wastes money and doesn’t work, so I don’t know why everyone insists on throwing their tax dollars (and general humanity) down the toilet to incarcerate people long term.
