With David Buss stepping back from the "good genes" explanation of female infidelity https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/999280466577559552 … many seem to think that mate choice in nature MUST inevetably reflect a preference for genetic quality. The story may be more capricious. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1558-5646.2012.01654.x …pic.twitter.com/y0X1GRGr4g

The idea that sexual selection is just natural selection by the backdoor - that mate choice in nature aims at features that are adaptive for survival - was introduced by Darwin's contemporary critic Alfred Russel Wallace . and later forgotten. https://www.amazon.com/Evolution-Beauty-Darwins-Forgotten-Theory/dp/0385537212/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1494698605&sr=1-1&keywords=darwin+beauty …pic.twitter.com/VNO9WbgpTW

The idea that sexually attractive (male) features are handicaps, indirectly signalling genetic quality, is seductive, but poses its own intellectual difficulties. https://www.amazon.com/Evolution-Beauty-Darwins-Forgotten-Theory/dp/0385537212/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1494698605&sr=1-1&keywords=darwin+beauty …pic.twitter.com/N4x3j8TXBA

But the handicap doesn't need to be unappealing. The appealing traits themselves can be costly to maintain and ergo handicaps. I'm not wedded to Zahavi's idea but this extract really doesn't seem to understand it.

I have been following the research on mate choice, especially in humans, passionately over many years and could not fail to notice that the handicap principle, though seductive, fares badly empirically. Also, that damning meta-analysis cited in Prumhttps://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/999540387017617408 …

Sure, I've been arguing we were overhasty in applying it to human dimorphism since 2005, but having started from that a fairly strong anti ICHH stance I've mellowed a bit more towards it since. That meta-analysis did find some health genefits in nonhuman offspring after all.

My wish is, given the sobering track record of good genes/handicap research, that its proponents come off their high horse. It is not the only theory in town, and the sexy son theory doen't look so bad.
