I think as a society, we still have to treat ourselves and others as if we had free will.

Presumably your referring mainly or solely the idea that "responsibility"' is necessary as a means of social enforcement and it may even have a autonomy that is higher than determinism. But maybe people just don't want to face the profound implications of determinism.

What does free will have to do with being 'nice'? Freedom and individual liberty aren't exercises in conditioning behavior. You don't get liberty because you are 'good'. You get it because it is your right!

I think it would be interesting to replicate this study with different methods of measuring anti-social and pro-social behavior and in order to get a more comprehensive view of the issue! Such a fascinating topic!

The free will/determinist dichotomy is an oversimplification. I happen to be the collection of molecules and cells that interact to produce my choice, and I feed back on that. Why can't free will be an emergent property of a complex system with internal feedback?

I finally found the proof. Turns out free will is logically impossible. However, you still get all the things you wanted free will for. So, sort of compatibilism?

Because it is thought (even Kant thought so) that the belief in free will is linked to the awareness of being morally responsible for one's deeds.
