Unfortunately, you can't really put people on sugar pills for twenty years to see how they turn out... and there's the obvious counter that of course the people with more mental problems are the ones who stayed on the anti-depressants, that's the whole point.

Good point. On the other side, drugs that make you feel good have the logically necessary risk of being a way to avoid a problem rather than confronting it.
