If a model cannot explain reality, it means the model is inadequate. The researchers missed a variable.

Was about to say the same thing. It *does* exist, so the question is why.

Several seem obvious: what are the signals of "better"? How many have that? (few) Odds that better mates already have better mates (than you), and you not stealing them: high. Children not getting same benefits from step parents (especially historically), contrary to real ones.

The fact that we have to come up with elaborate social and legal institutions like marriage, I suppose would suggest that perhaps they don't exist. We're always on the lookout, but then we constrain ourselves because of the incentives, or at least they help tip the scales

Nah; "always defect" is only the optimal solution in single-run games. In iterated games, cooperation gives the best long-term result. There could be a fine old argument over whether romance is single-run or iterated, but it's not like game theory could NEVER lead to love.

Cooperation is only the best long-term result in a game where your opponent can never change their mind. If they can, the optimal choice becomes "defect first." Which you might know if you knew anything about game theory.
