Oh this is fascinating. I would have guessed the opposite, that clear zebra markings made people feel more confident to cross without a light, but the “spreading disorder” idea in this case sounds plausible.

Why is this even a problem? Legal in UK, & our roads are safer. Drivers impose risks on others, pedestrians almost entirely risk takers. Yet they are the focus of enforcement.
