I appreciate the dissection of the APA's terrible over-statement, but politicizing media violence activism as a "tenet of liberalism" -"Liberal Theory of Aggression?" - seems deeply problematic. @DegenRolf @nathancofnas

The lead signer and pres of the AAP, Dr. Donald E. Cook, appears to have donated exclusively to republican campaigns, based on FEC filings. Honaker, the APA signee, left the APA after torture scandal. How is this a wholly "liberal" movement?

I think the argument is similar to the Seville statement on violence, it reflects a core element of liberalized psychology. Denying it would be threatening to psychology. But I agree, this is both a conservative/lib issue for different reasons.

Appreciate the response, but I still don't understand what "liberalized psychology" is. AFAIK psychology's (and soc. sci. more broadly) relationship to states' legislating the social order antecedes contemporary political liberalism.

Comte's positive philosophy of science, of course, clearly saw the social sciences as a means of articulating state power. In psychology, von Helmholtz wrote of the need for science to order the practices of the state.

In the US, Hall envisioned a psych that organizes the social order through the state, connected to current liberal & conservative values. To call psychology is 'liberalized' b/c the APA is wrong & bossy about media violence is a bit ahistorical.

But perhaps I am misunderstanding, don't have the rich 'experiences' with the APA organization that others do, or don't understand the ideological history of the organization adequately.

Terribly confused about this now :( Is the assertion that, because some APA members opposed the org's stance toward torture (10 years afterwards), it has a cohesive liberal ideology? I never understood torture to be liberal or conservative.

I'd guess (and it's just a guess) the APA is less concerned about ideology per se aside from fiddling for a particular audience, while "promoting psychology" in the sense of selling a product while failing to mention it's flaws.
