Bradshaw's _Cat Sense_ discusses the cat aspect: raised in millions, few fakes, large & usually well fed despite being obligate carnivores, etc. It's possible a lot of the domestication of cats was accomplished by the Egyptians and this is why they became usable for pest control.

(One of his other points is that we seem to be accidentally de-domesticating cats by our pervasive spay/neuter programs of pets and leaving most cat reproduction to ferals/strays who successfully avoid human contact. So ancient Egyptians might've had better cats than us!)
